Yesterday our JB Carr team made history by winning the County Final of the JB Carr for the first time. Taking a lead of 4.5 to .5 to Kenmare for the 2nd leg, 1 point was needed to secure victory.
In the first pairing John Pierce and Jamsey McGrath lost 5 & 4 to Pat O'Dwyer and Larry Kelly. The second pairing of John Barrett and Mike Hayes lost 3 & 2 to Michael Crowley and Michael O'Brien. The third pairing of James O'Sullivan and Eamon Stack lost 2 and 1 to Dave O'Dwyer and Derek Coakelin. This made the score 4.5 to 3.5 with everything to play for.
The fourth pairing of Joseph O'Connor and Tim Joe Griffin against Philip Burns and Paul O'Sullivan was a game that had several twists and turns. Joseph and Tim Joe were 3 up after 9, 1 up after 11, 3up after 13 and 1 down after 17.
While they were playing the last hole Anto Casey and John Collins were playing the 17th hole against Tom Carey and John J Mahony. Having won 16 to make the game all square, John hit a great tee shot on the par 3 17th to 15 feet and a lag putt from Anto was good enough to go 1 up with 1 to play and a half point guaranteed.
This meant that if Joseph and Tim Joe could win the 18th hole and half their match the game was over. Receiving a shot on the hole it came down to a 2 foot putt by Tim Joe to win the hole which he duly made. Next up is the Munster Semi Final with a home and away match against either Bandon or East Cork Golf Club.
Congrats to all the players on the panel for bringing the first ever JB Carr County Title to the club. Many thanks also to everyone in Kenmare for their hospitality and warm welcome we received.
